Frequent Questions and Answers About Green Smoothies
What is a Green Smoothie?
A green smoothie is a healthy drink made by blending green leaves such as spinach, lettuce, kale, and swiss chard with fruits such as bananas, berries, mangos, apples, and oranges.
I like to add a small amount of healthy fat such as avocodo, coconut butter, or seeds and nuts. They are called smoothies because you blend the ingredients until they are smooth (not chunky). This is important.
Why Would I Want to Drink a Green Smoothie?
Green Smoothies are one of the best ways to get fruits and vegetables into your diet. You then get all of the benefits of fruits and vegetables including a fit body, weight loss (if needed), more energy, and a simple delicious meal.
They also taste great, if you make them correctly!
Do I Drink a Green Smoothie With a Meal, or As A Meal?
You can do either. I sometimes have a smoothie with my meal. I may have some steamed veggies and some salmon with a smoothie. More often, I will simply have a smoothie as a meal.
When I am having a green smoothie as my entire meal, I will tend to add more fat and protein to it (in the form of nuts and seeds), so that I get all the nourishment I need.
Weren't Dr. Oz and Oprah Drinking Green Smoothies?
Yes, Dr. Mehmet Oz was on Oprah's show and introduced her to his Inspired Smoothie Recipe below:
2 cups spinach
2 cups cucumber
2 stalks celery
1/2 inch or teaspoon ginger root
1 bunch parsley
Juice of 1 lime
Juice of 1/2 lemon
Please note that this is a very "Strong" Green Smoothie and probably not the best one to start with for your first smoothie. Check out some of my recipes for some sweeter options.
